In less than a month, the first phase of HMRCโs Making Tax Digital (MTD) will go live.
This means that individuals who have qualifying earnings of ยฃ50,000+ through self-employment or property income will be required to comply with the new recording and reporting requirements from 6th April 2026. The system will continue in phases for lower income thresholds in 2027 (ยฃ30,000 +) and 2028 (ยฃ20,000 +).
To help holiday let owners prepare for the biggest change to income tax since HMRC launched Self-Assessment more than 30 years ago, our partner Zeal Tax has created an โeverything holiday let owners need to knowโ guide on Making Tax Digital which we are pleased to give you access to.
In this guide you will find key information on what will change, when you may be required to do MTD, important dates, exemptions, records you will need to keep, penalty systems and how you can prepare now, including step-by-step instructions on how to register for MTD.
Zeal has also reviewed several MTD compatible software, evaluating what they do well, who they are best suited for and essential criteria and features that you must consider when choosing your software.
